city space (between sidewalk and street)

Currently, I can't decide what on earth to do with our hell strip (the space between the street and the sidewalk. The space dimensions and relationship to the light pole don't allow us to have a street tree there, so the space is naked.

Just moved in January 2010, but are super excited to create an edible landscape of both perennials and annuals. Right now, we're working on digging out sunken beds and are elated about building soil via sheet mulching using alpaca manure, waste veggies from Sunflower Market, scavenged leaves, & Pablo's coffee grounds. Our excellent sunny southern exposure will hopefully bring a bountiful harvest. =D

So, you think you want to have your very own chickens?  Why?  Why not?!  But what kind of stuff should you sort of know before you dive in?  What kind of chickens?  Where do you get them?  How many?  How much work are they?  Are they really as cool as people say?  Are their eggs truly better than store-bought?
