Garden Like Nature: a Hands-On Forest Garden Workshop |
|
::Want to move beyond organic gardening to the next level of sustainability?:::
Forest gardening is a revolutionary method of designing edible perennial landscapes that mimic the diversity and resilience of forest ecosystems. Through permaculture, a design approach that seeks to apply nature's patterns to the human realm, we can design forest gardens that provide delicious food, healthy soil and attractive habitat – all without the continual tilling, weeding and watering of a conventional garden.
Join us in this hands-on workshop as we install one of Denver's first public forest gardens at Ekar Urban Farm. We'll introduce permaculture and discuss the practical theory behind forest gardening before getting our hands dirty building a 15'x35' sheet-mulched forest garden employing locally-adapted edible perennials. With a mix of lecture and hands-in-the-ground work, you'll learn:
- How to create fertile soil from waste material commonly found in the urban environment
- Which obscure edible plants are well-suited to Colorado's climate
- How to design and install self-maintaining edible landscapes that provide food, shade and beauty year after year
This hands-on opportunity is not to be missed!

Grow Local Colorado’s Volunteer Orientation |
|
What: Grow Local Colorado’s Volunteer Orientation
When: May 8th, Saturday, 11-12:30 p.m.
Where: 3222 Tejon St (Highlands, near DragonFly Eco Goods)
Why: Because this is such a fantastic project we want our volunteers ready to go once the gardens are planted (May 19th). Our goals are to:
· Inspire Denver citizens to grow edible gardens through edible public demonstration plots in local parks around the city, and
· Demonstrate how beautiful and interesting edible gardens can be just as ornamental gardens can be.
To reach those goals we’ll cover:
1) What tasks are requested of our volunteers and when
2) Which community in need will receive which garden's produce
3) Forms required of volunteers by Denver Parks and Recreation
4) Who to contact with questions and concerns
5) A sign up sheet for days volunteers will help out
6) Other volunteer skills that will make this project a success (we’re open to your ideas!)
Questions before then, contact: Barbara Masoner, bmasoner@aol.com |
